YYePG.Proudly.Presents,.Thx.For.Support! from me to you Me, my honey Kevin’s sister, Sarah (center), and my friend Shannon proudly sporting our “finishers” shirts What’s on my mind this month. A few months ago I asked you for words of motivation to help me run a half marathon in Huntington Beach, California. Well, I can’t even tell you how much your e-mails meant to me. I was so in awe of how wise you all are! And with your help, I did it—13.1 miles in 2 hours, 25 minutes, and 35 seconds! Running this half marathon was one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life. Afterward, I had this feeling of power—I felt superior to my former self. I had pushed my own personal limits farther than I’d thought possible. So I challenge all of you to try some kind of physical feat—a half marathon, a biathlon—something you never dreamed you could do. Summer’s the perfect time for it! Tell me how you’ll challenge yourself—I’m waiting to hear from you at susan@cosmogirl.com—your e-mails are my beach reads! Love, P.S. Well, not quite, but our executive director of marketing, Keith Gordon, has written a cool new musical called Saint Heaven that stars former teen star Deborah Gibson (think JoJo in 20 years!). Now I see she’s a normal teen going through things I went through at that age. She’s beautiful, talented, and so grown-up! I’m glad she Your raves and rants about our April found true happiness wrestler respect that shines Thank you for featuring Stacy Keibler on your “Work It!” page. It bothers me when people have a lack of respect through in who toward wrestlers. I like how you showed that female she is. Thanks, wrestlers like Stacy really do work hard. Not only did I get to CosmoGIRL! see one of my favorite female wrestlers, I learned how to —Brittney, 18, Providence, UT stay in shape like her too! —Breanna, 19, Magna, UT buddy up COSMOGIRL.COM/TRIVIA Fall Out Boy shares a name with a character from which cartoon TV show? issue. After your mention in the story “The Power to Change,” hundreds of CosmoGIRL! readers enrolled in our eBuddies program. E-Buddies is an e-mail friendship program for people with and without intellectual disabilities. However, due to its popularity, there is now a long waiting list of volunteers to participate. As an alternative, we encourage CosmoGIRL! readers to sign up for one of our in-person friendship programs. They can be matched with a disabled peer for the academic year at one of our 1,300 participating schools worldwide. For more information, go to best buddies.org. Thank you for being a part of a movement to end isolation for people with intellectual disabilities. —Joslyn Matthews, Best Buddies International, Miami, FL REACTION TO “THE CULTURE OF RICH” wake-up call reality check I grew up in Laguna Beach and wanted the luxuries that my friends had that I couldn’t indulge in because I’m not wealthy. Taking trips to Mexico and seeing people with less than I have made me see that my jealousies were ridiculous. Living glamorously makes us lose sight of what we have. Instead, we should help those who don’t have as much. Thanks! —Katie, 18, Glendora, CA “The Culture of Rich” really moved me. I was about to purchase an overly expensive purse, but now I realize that expensive things aren’t for everybody. People should like you for you, not for the contents of your closet! Thank you, CG! —Leanne, 23, Prescott Valley, AZ cash clash While I was flipping through my daughter’s CosmoGIRL!, I saw an article that featured a sidebar on “The Real O.C.” As a resident, I noticed some things you wrote were untrue. The average household income in Orange County is around $115,000, and the average in Newport Beach and Laguna Beach is higher. Instead of including the statistical info for all of Orange County, which you listed as around $80,000, you should’ve just looked at statistics for Newport Beach. —Sophia, 42, Newport Beach, CA Editor’s note: We listed the median income, not the average—which, according to the most recent United States Census Bureau, is $83,455. That figure is specifically for Newport Beach, not all of Orange County. We used the median because the superrich, who are still in the vast minority, skewed the average to be higher than the typical Newport Beach household income. Win $10,000! Have you made a difference in your school, your community, or the world? We wouldn’t be surprised if you have! And we want to recognize you for it. Veneers last 10 to 20 years. lumineers BEST FOR: lightly stained, slightly crooked, spaced, or chipped teeth COST: $700–$1,200 per tooth HOW IT’S DONE: Lumineers are a thinner type of veneers (each is about as thick as a contact lens), so the dentist doesn’t need to alter your natural teeth. Because they’re thin, they might have to be redone every 5 to 7 years. bonding BEST FOR: straight but gapped, slightly stained, or chipped teeth COST: $300–$1,000 per tooth HOW IT’S DONE: A dentist etches marks into your tooth’s enamel so a special plastic-like filler can stick to it. Help! —Ashley, 14, Cartersville, GA oops! COSMOGIRL.COM/TRIVIA Which former ’N Sync star lends his voice to Artie, a character in Shrek 3 ? A: Switch to a fast-drying aerosol self-tanner (see number 5, below); it soaks into your skin faster than lotions so it won’t get absorbed into your clothes. But if you like the color you get with your regular self-tanner, Ashley, apply it 30 minutes before bed. Immediately and thoroughly wash your hands after applying and then put on an old pair of pj’s— think of them as your self-tanner pj’s. If they get a little orange it won’t matter. When you wake up the next day, you’ll have the color you want without ruining any of your good clothes. Even with a blooper, Paris still looks hot! the great pumpkin Q: Self-tanners turn my fair skin carrot orange. How can I choose the right color? —Sarah, 17, Ogilvie, MN odor-able! Q: My self-tanner has a smell that lasts all day. How can I make it go away? —Kelsey, 16, Anchorage, AK A: Try a gradual self-tanning lotion (see number 4, below)—it’s a blend of moisturizer and self-tanner. When applied daily, it slowly builds up the color, giving your skin a natural-looking tan. Or pick a regular self-tanner that is white or clear when it comes out of the bottle—those usually contain lower levels of the tanning agent DHA and won’t develop too darkly. Pssst! Sarah! It’s always smart to patchtest the back of your wrist before slathering it all over. A: You’re smelling DHA, the ingredient in most self-tanners that colors your skin. As it develops, it reacts with your skin and causes a smell. Try applying your tanner at night and showering in the morning—that should subdue the odor a bit. (But don’t exfoliate or you’ll scrub off some of the tan.) Also try mixing lotion-based tanner with a quarter-sized blob of fragrance-free body lotion—it’ll dilute the tanner and make the scent milder. bronze bombshell Now that you’re a savvy self-tan-imal, here are a few new products to help you glow! 1. BY MICHELLE LEE RIBEIRO Despite all the warnings about how bad cigarettes are for you, smoking still kills more than 400,000 people in the U.S. every year. It’s one of the hardest habits to kick—even more difficult than many hard drugs. Doctors say the three-step method below is most successful. So show this article to a smoker you love—your mom, your aunt, your older sister—and tell her you want to help her quit. Your support may be the kick in the tush she needs! THE 3-STEP METHOD 1 PHASE planning to quit Working with a cessation therapist (which is covered by most insurance companies) greatly increases the chance of succeeding. They help smokers pinpoint their habitual smoking times (driving, talking on the phone) and devise a plan to fight the urge to smoke in those situations. Ask your doctor if she can recommend a cessation therapist. On the quit date you’ve decided on, help your relative get rid of all evidence that she is a smoker—toss all cigarettes, ashtrays, and lighters. Then she’ll start her chosen quitting tool—either nicotine replacement like the patch, inhaler, or gum, or the prescription medication Zyban*. Learn more about these tools at smokefree.gov/guide/ medicines/html. 2 quitting Exercising, eating healthy, drinking lots of water, and cutting out activities that make her want to smoke will help prevent a relapse. Also, continuing therapy is essential. (She can also call the National Cancer Institute hotline at 877-44U-QUIT for support.) The urge to smoke passes within 10 minutes—so tell her to call you so you can distract her for a few! PHASE 3 staying clean *Adult smokers are twice as likely to quit smoking successfully using these tools. Teens should ask their doctor what method is best for them. Experts say there is no scientific proof that methods like hypnosis and laser therapy work. “I had been a smoker since seventh grade, but when one of my relatives passed away from a smokingrelated illness, I quit. It’s been hard at times, but I’m proud of my accomplishment—it means I value myself.” —Mena Suvari road to health Check out how a smoker’s body begins to heal once she smokes her last cigarette. Here, the play-by-play of what’s going on: After 12 hours: The carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal. 1–9 months: Your circulation improves, lung function normalizes, and coughing decreases. 1 year: Your risk of heart disease is half of what it would be if you still smoked. 10 years: The rate of death from lung cancer is half that of a continuing smoker. 15 years: The risk of coronary heart disease is finally equal to that of a nonsmoker. 72 COSMOGIRL.COM/CHECKUP IF THIS STORY HELPS SOMEONE YOU LOVE QUIT SMOKING, TELL US! The Love Doctor has the answer. Dear Love Doctor, My boyfriend and I have been together for about five months and we couldn’t like each other any more than we already do. He can be the sweetest guy ever, but the thing is, my best friend doesn’t get along with him at all. She always makes fun of him by bringing something negative to my attention—like about the way he looks or the way he walks. Every time this happens, I like my boyfriend less and less. How should I handle this? —Chamel, 19, Stockton, CA He’s cute, but jeans on the beach is weird. Dear Chamel, There’s nothing wrong with your boyfriend. The problem is with your best friend. She’s jealous, which is why she’s trying to convince you that something’s wrong with your guy. Your friend may feel threatened by your relationship with him because she’s afraid that you’ll dump her for him. Or she may secretly wish she had someone like him. So if you want to keep seeing your guy (there’s no reason you shouldn’t) and stay friends with your friend, you need to (a) tell yourself that you’ll see your boyfriend only through your own eyes (remember that he’s yours and that’s why your opinion is the one that really counts!), and (b) tell your friend that her comments aren’t cool the next time she criticizes him. Then work on strengthening your relationship with her. Tell her that you’d love to hang with her more like you used to—and keep your word! Once she feels more secure in your friendship, the nasty comments should stop. —The Love Doctor Cooper Lawrence, a.k.a. Nick Lachey is so down-to-earth, sensitive, and funny, he sort of reminds you of an older brother (but we’d understand if you didn’t want to be related to him. Wink!). BY KRISTEN SARDIS < OPEN So you think you know Nick Lachey? When you hear his name, you probably think of a certain reality show. Maybe you remember him as half of the paparazzi dream couple. Well, forget all that. Instead, think of your best guy friend who’s got the number one spot on your speed dial. Remind yourself of your protective older brother who never wants to see you get hurt. Think, This is the guy I’d trust to dog-sit my precious puppy. That’s how I’ve come to think of Nick Lachey. But I didn’t always feel this way. The first time I was supposed to do this interview with him over the phone, he stood me up (scheduling conflicts). The next day, we talked for only 20 minutes (darn schedule!). When I got him on the phone again, I was ready to give him some serious ’tude. But the minute he started talking, I just couldn’t. He apologized for the phone games. He laughed at my lame jokes. He was so, well, nice, it was hard for me to remember that this is the guy whose face is on the cover of every tabloid. The guy I went to see in cosmogirl.com June/July 2006 PHOTOGRAPHS BY STEPHEN DANELIAN YYePG.Proudly.Presents,.Thx.For.Support! 95 CREATIVE DIRECTOR, JACQUELINE AZRIA-PALOMBO. RALPH LAUREN; JEANS, TRUE RELIGION. concert in my 98 Degrees tee. I didn’t feel like I was talking to Nick Lachey—just Nick, some guy from school who happens to be really hot. When I asked him how he manages to be so unaffected by Hollywood, he summed it up in one word: family. “We were always really close, so I get a lot of strength from them,” explains Nick, 32. “My mom came to my soccer games, and my dad walked us home from school.” The other part of “us” is of course Nick’s younger brother, Drew, 29. Growing up in their conservative household, the two Lacheys formed a tight bond when they were young. “We weren’t allowed to listen to the Top 40 radio station or watch movies with witches in them,” laughs Nick. “I wasn’t even allowed to play football because my mother was worried I’d get hurt!” Nick’s parents divorced when he was in first grade, and his relationship with Drew grew even stronger as Nick sort of became Drew’s protector. “I felt I had to look out for him,” Nick says. “I remember I’d cry whenever Drew and I got into a fight and then he got punished, because I had gotten him in trouble.” It’s kind of surprising to hear Nick talk so openly about his love for his family. There’s just something about a really hot guy who loves sports and who likes to move his own furniture.... You don’t expect him to be so sensitive. But once again, we can thank his family for that. “My dad was never the dad who didn’t tell you that he loves you, and he was never afraid to cry,” says Nick. “He taught me to respect women—he was always a strong influence in my life.” It’s safe to assume that Nick will be a great role model to his own sons one day—especially on the football field. “I want to be supportive, not the dad who embarrasses his kids because he’s fighting with the referee,” he says. While kids are on his to-do list, Nick is content focusing on his career for the time being. In addition to a new TV show in the works, tentatively called She Said/He Said, he just released a new album, What’s Left of Me. “I’m so excited about my album,” he says, sounding a bit like a little kid at show-and-tell. “It’s a series of snapshots over the last year of my life—the ups and the downs. I was honest. People can either like it or not, but at least they can’t complain that it’s not genuine.” That’s Nick: nothing to hide or be ashamed of—and no regrets about anything. “There are a lot of ways that things could’ve turned out differently,” he says. “But I’m pretty happy with the way my life has turned out.” ! PINK The wild child of pop has a new album and a new hubbie. And this time around, she doesn’t just want you to shake your booty to her music—she wants you to learn from it too. So spread the word: Pink is the new Pink! BY LAUREN BROWN No one would ever accuse Pink of being shy. From the moment she burst onto the music scene with her trademark hot pink hair and infectious hit songs like “Get the Party Started,” you knew she was outrageous with a capital O. Her philosophy has always been to put herself out there and not care about what anyone else thinks. But in the three years since her last album, Pink, now 26, has gone through a personal transformation. “I feel more alive than ever,” the Doylestown, Pennsylvania, native told CosmoGIRL! “My dad had a heart attack, and my life became so much less about my drama and more about the world around me.” When you listen to her new album, I’m Not Dead, the change is apparent. Her songs touch on everything from politics to death to the superficiality of young Hollywood. She’s still totally in-your-face (we love that about her!), but now her moxie has a mission: She wants to make you think. Hard. Here, she talks about her music, her new husband—and the issues that inspired her to record a kick-ass album. P: I hung out at the skate park watching the boys skate. And one day I was like, “You know what? I don’t want to hang out. I want to skate! ” I could skate just as good as the guys, and with that came a different kind of respect. Guys are just used to a certain type of girl, and when they meet one they can have a conversation with and learn from, they’re relieved. It becomes more than just arm candy. CG!: Well, your husband, Carey Hart, obviously loves that you’re a strong woman—you proposed to him! How did you find the courage to do that? P: I always told him I didn’t believe in marriage and was like, “Don’t ask me.” Then one day I realized, Carey and I are just so on the same page. I can go dirt bike riding with him, and I can go wine tasting with him. I had no doubt in my mind that he’d say yes, so I just figured I’d shock the hell out of him. CG!: Did you get all girlie with the planning of the wedding? P: Oh my god, yes! I wanted to wear the dress, I wanted to be barefoot on the beach, I was on the Internet all day long.... I was out of control! CG!: That sounds so unlike you! But you seem to be different in a lot of ways now—at the beginning of your career, you were lumped in with all of the teen girl pop stars. How do you see yourself now musically? P: I’m content with the fact that no one can pigeonhole me and no one can put me in a box and no one can expect anything from me. I’m like a big mystery bag—you never know what you’re going to get! And I’m comfortable with that. ! CosmoGIRL!: A lot of the songs on your new album are very political. What issues are most important to you? Pink: Tolerance as a whole. Women’s rights, animal rights, gay rights—it all goes back to tolerance. I get e-mails from friends about stuff—like how they just banned abortion in South Dakota even if it’s incest or rape. I’m like, Why aren’t people talking about this? CG!: One song, “Who Knew,” is about the death of one of your friends. Were you two very close? P: Yeah, I grew up with him. He was sort of a jock, and then he got into drugs and had an overdose and was gone. And I was like, But he was a football player! So I was thinking about the death of a friend and the death of friendships. How you’re so connected to people at one point, and then all of a sudden two years have gone by and you don’t even have their phone number anymore and you’re like, What happened? CG!: In your “Stupid Girls” video, you slam young Hollywood for their partying and shopping. Has there been any backlash from the stars you mocked? P: [Laughing] No, they don’t have my phone number! I’m not out to hurt people, but I don’t believe in walking on eggshells. In my mind, everyone can find humor in it and self-examine, and the world can be a better place. CG!: Did something happen that made the lightbulb go off, making you want to talk about this Hollywood problem? P: It’s a conversation I’ve been having with a lot of people, and I just felt that it was the song I needed to write. I feel like in the tabloids and in this stalkerazzi culture, the image being jammed down everyone’s throats is that you have to be a size 0 and be born with millions of dollars to be cool. It’s just nauseating, and it’s draining. CG!: When did you realize how important it is to be a strong woman? ORIGINAL PHOTO, ANDREW MACPHERSON. BLIGE The queen of R&B is so strong, she’s practically a superhero! But all superpowers come with a dark side. Here, MJB shares her biggest regret from when she was 16— and the trials that made her the spiritual woman she is today. BY ANN SHOKET Last period can be brutal—especially when your social studies teacher is droning on about whatever, and all you can think about is the way your sister humiliated you in front of your friends on the way to school. And as soon as the bell rings, you have even more to worry about, because you know that on your way home you’re going to have to fight off a bunch of bullies. It’s enough to make a girl want to put her head down, go to sleep, and just disappear. That’s what Mary J. Blige says her life was like at 16, growing up in Yonkers, New York, a suburb of New York City. Unfortunately, she didn’t make it through high school—she dropped out during her junior year with dreams of becoming a star. But while she may have left the bullies behind, she faced new drama. As she was climbing her way to the top of the Billboard charts, she was being dragged down by her struggles with drugs and toxic boyfriends. But Mary proves the old saying that what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. Now with a new number one album, The Breakthrough, she’s in a better place—on top. Here, she shares her hardwon wisdom so that we can all be as amazing as Miss Mary J.! CosmoGIRL!: What were you like in high school? Mary J. Blige: I was quiet and smart. I wasn’t the tough guy, but I ended up having to beat up the tough guy to get respect. I wasn’t a troublemaker— I ended the trouble. CG!: What was the moment that you realized you had to be strong? MJB: The day I wore my sister’s sneakers and she was so upset with me that we had a fight over it. I thought, As much as I love you, it doesn’t make sense for us to go through stuff like this. I don’t have to deal with anyone who doesn’t want me around. CG!: What advice would you give to your 16-year-old self? MJB: That you can’t just go home and take a nap when things are tough. You have to shake it off and learn. CG!: What about dating advice? MJB: Don’t chase boys. You have to be cool. If you have to chase after them, that means they don’t really want to be bothered with you, right? CG!: A lot of your songs are about major love lessons. What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from your past relationships? MJB: With all of my relationships, it was one bad experience after another. After going through so much, you get hardened. I was like, I’m going to use guys the way they use girls. But that’s not good. I’ve learned that you can’t think that everybody’s a bad person—or else you start not trusting anyone. CG!: What was the best advice that your mom ever gave you? MJB: My mom always used to say that you can’t please everyone. I never understood that until now. And she always told me never to leave the house without clean underwear on! ! MARY ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS! Q: Who helped you change from who you were before to who you are today? —Paola, 18, Miami Lakes, FL MJB: I did it with the help of God. About two years ago, before I went in to do this album, I was going through a lot of stuff with people I thought were on my side. It turned out they weren’t, and I felt like I didn’t have anyone. But I realized that you have to be faithful and walk with your head up and do the right thing—that makes God proud. Q: During hard times, how do you stay focused mentally, spiritually, and emotionally? —Kathy, 17, Reynoldsburg, OH MJB: It makes you stronger if you’re not dependent on other people. People aren’t always going to be there for you. They’re going to let you down—they’re just people at the end of the day. So you have to learn to depend on yourself. You’ve got to get over needing people’s approval and start living for yourself. Q: I want to be a singer, but my family isn’t blessed with money. What can I do to make it? —Jessica, 16, Brooklyn, NY MJB: Just try to record some music and send it to a record company. My family wasn’t blessed with money either, so I went to the mall and recorded a tape and then gave it to my mother’s boyfriend, who knew someone in the business. The point is, don’t wait for it to come to you. Go out and get it! Q: Who is your favorite new singer? —Josie, 20, Louisville, KY MJB: Chris Brown—he’s such a nice guy! We thought there should be a way for high school kids to meet others with similar interests in their towns—so they could become offline friends too. MySpace lets you find people with your interests anywhere, but we wanted to create a way to type in a band and find people in our school who are also fans. When our older brother, Geoff, who had started his own successful business, heard our idea, he invested money for us to start our own site: MyYearbook.com. We created tons of features for it, like ‘lockers’ (where you can upload music and photos), ‘icebreakers’ (funny instant messages you can send), pages for school clubs, and polls. We also made it safe: Your contact info is blocked, even from your online friends, until you agree to provide it. And you can choose to let only people from your school see your page, which you can’t do on MySpace. In April 2005, we launched the site in just our high school, and 200 people signed up the first week. Last fall, we expanded so students all over the world could sign up. We went from 20 new users a day to 6,000, and Amazon’s alexa.com named us the fifthfastest-growing Web site (and we’re still growing)! GREENE 1. Do you love being in front of an audience? Yes 2. Are you uninhibited and imaginative? Yes 3. Do you deal well with rejection or criticism? Yes No No No If you said yes to all of these questions and you are passionate and dedicated to the craft of acting (and not just in it to become rich and famous), then you could have a future career as a working actress. Read on to learn more. WILL YOU LIKE IT? COSMOGIRL.COM/TRIVIA Which One Tree Hill star played the role of Elvis Presley in Walk the Line ? Working actresses told us what they love and hate about their job. PROS: Collaborating with other creative people like writers and directors, getting to research and become all kinds of characters, and the sound of applause after a great performance. CONS: You’ll have to work another job to pay bills while you look for acting jobs, there are long hours waiting around on sets, and there aren’t always benefits like health insurance or paid time off. HOW DO YOU START? Here’s what you can do now to get stage- or camera-ready. START TRAINING EARLY: Good actors are schooled in a variety of artistic skills. Start as young as you can with basics like voice lessons or dance classes. Also try to develop a nonacting talent, like gymnastics, fencing, or a for- eign language; many parts call for specialized skills, and knowing one or more of them will make you stand out. IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE CRAFT: Read everything you can about acting techniques (try Uta Hagen’s Respect for Acting) and the industry (try How to Be a Working Actor by Mari Lyn Henry and Lynne Rogers, and backstage.com—a great resource for working actors). Go see many types of performances (movies, local theater, ballet, etc.) to observe different styles. To be employable, you’ll need to be able to portray a variety of characters, as opposed to one type. GET EXPERIENCE PERFORMING: It’s important to build a portfolio, so take any opportunity you get to act. Join the drama club, sing in the choir, attend acting camp (usperforming arts.com), audition for student films at a local college, or try out to be an extra in a film (moviex.com). GO TO COLLEGE: Major in acting, drama, theater, or film. Start your search with Peterson’s Professional Degree Programs in the Visual & Performing Arts 2006 or atoz colleges.com and look for schools with programs that focus on the genre (i.e.: stage, TV, film) that you’re interested in—Yale and NYU have well-known programs. Casting directors and producers search for new talent by going to productions at theater schools. WHAT DOES IT PAY? There is no typical salary since pay varies based on things like the genre, the size of the part, your experience, and whether you’re a union member (sag.org, aftra.com, or actors equity.org). A working actress can make anywhere from $5,000 to $50,000 and up annually. ! HOW THEY GOT STARTED All celebs have to get their start somewhere. Check out these stars’ earliest gigs. M y mom says I could walk and talk from a really young age. I was also a really crazy and active kid, so when I was 3 years old, she got me into acting. I started off doing some commercials, but it was the job I got on Star Trek when I was 9 that convinced me I wanted to have a career as an actress. It was just so much fun, I told my mother, “I know acting is what I want to do!” For the next three years, I continued working on Star Trek and going on auditions. And in the summer of 2000, I landed my first series regular—I got the part of Reba McEntire’s daughter, Kyra, on the WB show Reba. I was only 12. school that much since most of my friends were actors anyway. Over the next four years, I loved working on Reba. Reba McEntire herself is a great person, and I was close to all the other cast members too. Plus, I thought the controversial story lines—a teen pregnancy and the dad running away with a dental assistant—were really cool. But at Christmastime 2004, when I was 16, my life started to change—and not in a good way. I had gained a few pounds from all the cakes and cookies everyone had baked during the holidays, and for some reason, it bothered me. I’d never been somebody who worried about food at all—I’d just eat when I was hungry and stop when I was full. But around this time, I was really stressed out personally. I had gotten a band together and was trying to find producers and cowriters I really clicked with, but there were some personality conflicts. I felt like I didn’t have any control over my life. So although I knew I didn’t need to lose weight, I wanted to. I guess I was looking for something I could control. I became obsessed with losing weight. At first it was innocent, like just cutting back on sweets and junk food. But by the summer of 2005, my weird habits with food had gotten worse. I’d go over to someone’s house for dinner and not really eat. I was good at hiding my problem—I had lots of tricks so people didn’t even notice I wasn’t eating that much. I’d tell myself things like, Okay, I won’t let myself get lower than this weight. But then I’d get there and think, Well, maybe I’ll just keep doing this and I’ll stay at this weight. It was always, Just lose two more pounds, two more pounds. I couldn’t stop. “Now I understand why most actresses don’t come out about their eating disorders.” By the end of last summer, I had dropped a lot of weight—and people started to notice. My friends, family, and coworkers would ask me, “Why aren’t you eating that?” It was so uncomfortable. Having an eating disorder is a 24-hour gig because you always have to make up excuses for why you’re not going to lunch with somebody and stuff like that. My mom was around me the most, so she saw how sick I was. One day I just broke down and told her I thought I had a problem, and she took me to a nutritionist right away. I also saw a therapist, but I still couldn’t bring myself to eat. In October, my mom and I decided that I would enter an intensive treatment program. But before I could tell the Reba producers, they called me in and told me I needed to leave the show and get help. They said I was a liability—if something happened to me on the set, the studio would be held responsible. I was shocked because I hadn’t received any warning. But since I had already planned on going for treatment anyway, it really wasn’t a big deal. I just figured I’d go and get help and then come back to work in a month. rock bottom Scarlett with Reba costar Steve Howey in August 2004, before the onset of her anorexia Scarlett performing at NYC’s Roxy club in March 2005 clinic, eat the meals, and kind of spin my wheels in therapy—then leave and exercise off everything I’d just eaten. Outpatient treatment obviously wasn’t enough, so I decided to enter an inpatient facility. I hated being there, but one day I suddenly realized how out of control my life had gotten. I said to myself, Oh my god. When am I going to wake up? This is a dream. I’m like a prisoner. It was time for me to get better. And I worked hard to get there. I finished my one-month inpatient treatment in November 2005 and was so excited to go back to work. But for some reason, I was told I couldn’t return to the set. I was so confused. I had done what they asked, and it seemed like I was being punished for being honest about my eating disorder. Now I understand why most actresses don’t come out when they have eating disorders—at least not until many years later. They’re afraid that if they do, it’ll ruin their career because they won’t get hired. And I think that’s really sad. taking control I went to an outpatient facility, but I was still holding on to the eating disorder as much as I could. I’d go to the new beginning It’s been six months since I finished my treatment, and I’ve maintained a healthy weight. I’m still seeing a nutri- tionist and a therapist to make sure I don’t fall back into old bad habits, but I have to work at it every day. As for my job, I still don’t know if I’ll ever get to go back to work on Reba. Of course I want to—I never intended to leave in the first place. And looking back now, I realize I had to go away for a while in order to focus on getting well. There were days on set when I felt very tired because I was so thin that I had no energy. But I really did think my leave of absence would only be temporary. After all, my producers never said I couldn’t come back. I guess they have their reasons for keeping me off the show for now, but I’m still hoping to return next season. In the meantime, I’m focusing on helping others with eating disorders. I worked with the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) to start an organization called Arch Angels, which helps people with eating disorders who can’t afford treatment or whose insurance won’t pay for it. I try to look at my eating disorder as something that had to happen—because it’s led to my helping and inspiring others. I may not be doing what I want with my TV career at the moment, but I will not let my eating disorder ruin my entire life. ! COSMOGIRL.COM/TRIVIA In which country were Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley both born? CG! FOR PRESIDENT IN 2024! MTV president Christina Norman went from regular desk jockey to head honcho. With her as your life coach, consider yourself Made! BY RACHEL LANDY, 21 Raise your hand if you’ve ever watched I Love the ’80s or Best Week Ever. Can you imagine life without the 10 Spot? Well, you have Christina Norman to thank. She’s been the mastermind behind some of the most popular shows on VH1 and MTV. And now, as the president of MTV: Music Television (the world’s largest television network!), she’s in charge of MTV, MTV2, mtvU, MTV Overdrive, and MTV Español—making her one of the most powerful women in the entertainment industry. And oh yeah, she also gets to hang out with stars like Diddy and Madonna. How did Christina score such a sweet gig? Working as a production manager at MTV in the ’90s, she helped make Beavis and Butt-Head pop culture icons. Her hard work and creativity got the attention of the bigwigs, and she rose through the ranks to be named president of MTV’s sister network, VH1, in 2004. A year and a half later, after leading VH1 to its highest ratings ever, Christina was asked to return to MTV—this time as president. As a music business major at NYU, it’s easy for me to get discouraged about the industry because the competition is so fierce. But Christina says that real success is a long race and if we start to do the best we can now, we’ll be closer to the finish line. Here’s how to train for the marathon of life: Rachel Landy: When you were in high school, how did you picture your future? Christina Norman: I thought I would have some sort of creative pursuit. I didn’t know how I’d do that exactly but I knew I wanted to contribute something in that way. RL: When did you first realize what you wanted to do with your life? CN: I was aimless for a while. I told myself, “Chances are you’ll get a job.” But that was different from a career. So I had a friend who was a production manager and she hired me as a production assistant. It was $75 a day to make coffee, run errands, and stand around the set. But that was where I got exposed to filmmaking. I thought, “Great! This is what I want to do. I want to work in film.” It fit me. RL: Growing up, what did you learn from your parents about how to be successful? 122 COSMOGIRL.COM/2024 TELL US WHO YOU WOULD LIKE TO INTERVIEW FOR PROJECT 2024! Xtina (as her friends call her) and Kelly Clarkson at the 2005 Video Music Awards I Love the ’80s was one of the most successful shows on VH1 while Christina was in charge. THIS IS THE TRUE STORY... of Christina’s life as a heavy hitter! CN: Be nice to people. My mother was an administrative assistant and I’d tag along with her to work sometimes. I learned how to carry myself in a corporate setting. For example, you were not mean to my mother on the phone. If you were, you didn’t get to talk to her boss. RL: You’ve been responsible for so many amazing successes at MTV and VH1. How do you know what’s going to work? CN: You have no idea what’s going to work. That’s why you have to keep trying—because for every success there are a thousand failures before that. Know that it’s okay to fail because it’s something that’s going to help you succeed. RL: What can a girl like me do now to accomplish what she wants? CN: Speak up for yourself because you are valid. Your needs are valid, what you want is valid, and what you give is valid. You’ve got to find a way to use your voice to get what you need. But it’s not just running off at the mouth. A lot of people talk but don’t have anything to contribute. So learn when to listen and when to talk. RL: What’s the secret to moving up in the ranks of a huge company like MTV? CN: What’s important is doing a good job and volunteering for something that may not be your core. It’s hard to figure out, How do I do more than this one thing they’ve asked me to do? But people will give you more if you just show an interest. RL: What’s the most important skill girls should develop to be successful? CN: Patience. For young women there’s an incredible amount of pressure to advance yourself. There are interns who say they want to be me. But I’m like, “Be great at you first. Then you can be somebody else.” You have to be the best you you can be. ! Christina’s first big break came when she volunteered to work on Beavis and Butt-Head before it premiered. EVERYONE It’s a drizzly morning in West Hollywood, California, when the star of The Simple Life walks into La Conversation, a café not far from her house. Okay, let’s just get the burning question out of the way. Yeah, she’s as tiny as you’d imagine. She’s decked out in all black, with vintage bracelets from Gucci and Chanel covering both forearms. Is she hiding her body on purpose? Maybe. Does she have an eating disorder? Or, as has been reported, is she suffering from a metabolic disorder so her body just will not put on weight no matter what? Hard to know for sure. It’s true that Nicole, 24, is skinnier than when she first starred on The Simple Life, which starts its fourth season in early June on E! But she doesn’t look like she’s at death’s door, and her hair isn’t falling out, as the tabloids say. And she’s certainly not starving herself today. Nicole orders waffles, bacon, and OJ right off the bat (turns out the waffle machine is broken, so she settles for huevos rancheros). “Sure, I could stand to gain a few pounds,” Nicole admits. “It’s just as hurtful being called anorexic as being called overweight. I’ve actually had the tabloids call my publicist and say, ‘We’ll do an exclusive! She just needs to come out and say something!’ But there is nothing to say. There’s nothing I can do about it.” There’s a steely resolve in her voice, and you can tell Nicole’s not as fragile as some people think. THE DARK SIDE OF FABULOUS You know Nicole’s backstory: Two years ago, after a stint in rehab for heroin addiction, she costarred with Paris Hilton on The Simple Life. She was supposed to be Paris’s sidekick, but her cool-as-a-cucumber personality started to outshine Paris, and she became a breakout star. Next, Nicole and her boyfriend, Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein, got engaged. Nicole was living what seemed to be the perfect life—she was fit, sober, and in love. But then in the last year or so, the bubble burst. She and Adam broke off their engagement, she’s not even speaking with Paris anymore, and a Hollywood club. “It’s like playing in the sandbox or making prank calls or whatever I liked to do when I was 9. It gets old after a while,” Nicole says. “There are so many new things to be excited about. There is something about being responsible and financially independent. Having that freedom for yourself is so much more fun than getting wasted every night.” Nicole has also weeded out the bad influences in her life. “Taking care of myself is way more important to me than hanging around idiots,” she says. “After I came out of rehab, I kinda woke up. I was like, Oh, I’m really good friends with this person…wait, why am I friends with them? They’re not so great for me. Okay, I’m gonna cut them out. I didn’t do it in the nicest way sometimes, but I had to do it.” One of the people Nicole has cut out of her life is Paris Hilton. Despite about it. I think I’m just gonna keep it private from now on.” Nicole admits that she’s still working on getting the love thing right. When she was 16, she was in a codependent relationship. Another ex, who she’s still friends with, turned out to be gay. “I had no idea then,” Nicole says. “When I look back on it, I would paint my nails baby blue and he would ask me to paint his!” She was just as blind to other situations that weren’t good for her: When she was 19, she dated a guy who was into drugs, which made her own addiction worse. “I realize now why my parents said, ‘Don’t get too serious too young,’” Nicole says. “You are still learning who you are. No matter what relationship you go into it’s important to have a really strong sense of self before you step in, so you don’t meld into the person. Or so if you break up, hopefully you’re okay.” THING. I DON’T ALWAYS MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICES. BUT I’M WORKING ON IT.” she’s being hounded by the tabloids, who love to talk about the protrusion of her collarbone. “It hurts your feelings to think so many people can just freely say bad things about you and not feel bad about it or it’s funny to them,” Nicole says. “The idea that somebody can make up a lie and feel great about themselves...you know, on the other end, they are hurting someone.” But rather than walking around feeling wounded, Nicole has become stronger in the past year. “I’m focusing on a new stage of my life,” she says. “I’ve been trying to focus on always taking a step forward and trying to do the right thing. I don’t always make the right choices, but I’m working on it.” the fact that they haven’t spoken in over a year, they finished the fourth and final season of their show this past spring. This time, both girls sub for southern California moms, but the taping was arranged so they filmed no scenes together. Uncomfortable? Not for Nicole. “I don’t let my personal life affect my work life,” she says firmly. Nicole has surrounded herself with other friends. “I don’t love to be alone,” she admits. “My house is very busy. Friends in and out all the time.” Not that all of her friends are first-nameonly famous. “Once you’re out of high school you see how silly all that stuff is,” she says. “In my life now, I don’t consider anyone ‘dorks’ or ‘cool people.’ The older you get, the more you realize you need a handful of good, close, tight friends. If they’re loyal and nice people, and if you can learn something from them, then that’s really all you need.” FOCUSING ON THE FUTURE At the moment, it looks like Nicole and Adam are back on (they were seen making out on a beach in Mexico in early March). But love isn’t Nicole’s only focus—her career is busy. She’s starting a jewelry line and following up her book from last year, The Truth About Diamonds, with a new book on style. Like her dad, pop legend Lionel Richie, Nicole says music is her biggest passion and she is recording a CD of songs about “what I’m going through right now, just growing up and becoming a woman,” she says. As if that’s not enough, she’s also developing a sitcom! “My mom used to always be like, ‘You need to focus on one thing. You’re gonna grow up and you’re not going to know what you want to do.’ Luckily, I grew up at the right time, because now everyone is doing everything!” Nicole certainly seems confident, but you have to wonder if this year has made her feel a little vulnerable. Success and fame can be so fleeting, and Nicole knows that better than anyone. Will she become a media mogul? A singing superstar? Nicole’s not planning too far ahead. “Every time I plan something it doesn’t turn out the way I want it to. So I don’t know—I just want to have fun!” ! PARTY The invite sets the tone and psyches guests for the party to come, so be creative. Mariah Carey sent personalized video messages to her guests’ cell phones for her Grammy party. Let technology inspire you: Text message your invite or set up a party blog or Web site and send out a link to it. It doesn’t cost a lot to make a memorable invite— it just takes imagination. LIKE A CELEBRITY A celeb-worthy party has to have an element of surprise to wow guests. At a GM Ten fashion show and charity bash, Kanye West gave an unexpected performance; Usher and Motorola had live panthers at his VMA after-party; and Morgenson will never forget the acrobats hanging from the ceiling at Volkswagen’s 2005 Jetta launch party. Maybe you can’t fly in Kelly Clarkson for the night, but you can do something unexpected or edgy. Invite back a friend who moved away (don’t tell anyone—let them be surprised when she shows up!), or bring out your friend’s band to play a surprise set. PLAN A BASH TODAY WITH THESE CELEBINSPIRED IDEAS, AND TOMORROW VH1 MIGHT PROFILE THE FABULOUS LIFE OF… YOU! BY LAUREN A. GREENE NOBODY KNOWS how to throw a party better than the rich and famous. So we took a look at their soirees to find the coolest common elements. Then, with the help of Lara Morgenson, E! Online’s “Hollywood Party Girl,” and the party- planning divas of Haven, a NYC-based event planning and PR company that throws tons of celeb-packed parties, we came up with six basic rules for pulling off a fabulous bash. Try them and we bet your next party will have the paparazzi in a frenzy! 1 WOW THEM WITH THE INVITATION 3 ALWAYS KEEP THEM GUESSING PHOTOS: MILLER, LESTER COHEN/WIREIMAGE.COM; LOHAN, CHRIS POLK/FILMMAGIC.COM; DIDDY, DIMITRIOS KAMBOURIS/WIREIMAGE.COM; BLACK EYED PEAS, JEMAL COUNTESS/WIREIMAGE.COM; WEST, SHAREIF ZIYADAT/FILMMAGIC.COM; SIMPSON, MICHAEL CAULFIELD/WIREIMAGE.COM. The hot trend lately is for celebs to DJ big parties—Lindsay Lohan took charge of the music at the wrap party for her upcoming film Chapter 27. To keep everyone pumped, ask your friend with the most-wanted iPod list to “guest DJ” your party. Set up a fold-out table as a DJ area and make up forms so everyone can submit requests—you’ll keep the party going all night! 5 DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE DJ When celebs throw a theme party they go all out to create a big buzz—like Diddy’s famous annual White Party in the Hamptons, where guests have to dress in head-to-toe white (undies too!) to get in. Pick a theme (all pink, ’70s, safari, whatever!) and follow it through. “At the launch party for the Tweety Bird clothing line at the L.A. boutique Kitson, there was even a wig table so we could all be yellow-blond like Tweety!” says Party Girl Morgenson. For your party, think of every possible place you can add theme details—from food to decor— and your event will be over-the-top! cosmogirl.com June/July 2006 2 PUSH YOUR THEME TO THE MAX Paparazzi, velvet ropes, a guest list, and VIP rooms make celebs feel like they’re the chosen ones. It’s easy to create this feeling of exclusivity at your party—have a burly guy friend play bouncer, make a “list” for him to check, roll out red fabric, and have another friend snap photos of guests as they arrive. You can even rope off a VIP section of the room. 4 GIVE GUESTS THE STAR TREATMENT The celeb way to end a fantastic party is with a fantastic bag of swag. Stars leave events with tons of loot. “We once organized a $1,500 gift bag for the Race to Erase MS, a starstudded charity gala,” say the girls from Haven. Give guests something just as memorable without dropping loads of cash: Get candy in bulk at Costco and make baskets with each friend’s favorite goodies; DIY cheap tanks from Target with rhinestone nicknames; or search online for cheap theme-related gifts, like mini disco balls for a ’70s party. It’ll be so fabulous, your friends will demand an after-party. ! 6 SEND THEM HOME WANTING MORE 153 YYePG.Proudly.Presents,.Thx.For.Support! YYePG.Proudly.Presents,.Thx.For.Support! PLAYER MOOCH GOOFY DORK DATING CRIMES Meet the DSI (Date Scene Investigation) team, a top-secret unit (headed by Ian Kerner, Ph.D., author of DSI: Date Scene Investigation) whose sole mission is to investigate your most common dating dilemmas. Let’s face it, guys make crazy mistakes—dating crimes, so to speak. But what might seem like a full-blown felony to you could just be a silly misunderstanding to him. So before you put your guy on trial, do a little investigating! The following are four common offenses and the CG! way to reform even the worst dating criminal. JUST BECAUSE A GUY ISN’T PERFECT DOESN’T NECESSARILY MEAN YOU HAVE TO PUT HIM IN JAIL AND THROW AWAY THE KEY! THE CRIME: He didn’t call Plaintiff #1 had a crush on Intense Guy at her weekend drama program. One evening, after a play read-through, they talked for hours about their Hollywood dreams, then engaged in some “deep-breathing exercises” (okay, they seriously made out!). Three days later, when he hadn’t called, she wondered if he’d been acting with her. IN HIS DEFENSE: When things get hot and heavy fast, guys get confused: Were you looking for a boyfriend or just to fool around? To avoid the “Are we or aren’t we dating” talk, a guy may tell himself it was just for fun. That way, he thinks calling you is an optional move, and he sometimes opts not to make it. SENTENCE: Before locking him away for good, send him a “What’s up?” text. If he texts or calls with a legit-sounding excuse, or he writes something like, “Nothing, want to hang?” let him off the hook this time. There’s a chance he was waiting to hear from you first. But if it’s more like, “Nothing. What’s up with you?” he’s being standoffish, so delete him from your phone. He deserves to serve some time—away from you. THE CRIME: He hasn’t made a move Plaintiff #2 was getting flirty vibes from the foxy emo guy at her summer job. After work one Friday, they went out for milk shakes and he talked about his new band/blog/photography project. She’d been thinking about kissing him since the busboy cleared their table, but when he dropped her off at home, he didn’t even give her a hug! IN HIS DEFENSE: Lack of confidence might be the culprit. All that talk about himself was probably just nerves. Some cosmogirl.com June/July 2006 158 ILLUSTRATION BY MARCOS CHIN YYePG.Proudly.Presents,.Thx.For.Support! LAZY STINKY BORE JERK guys can’t help but blabber on when trying to impress a girl they like. SENTENCE: Send him to boot camp! Make another plan to hang out alone with him. If he starts the chatter again, put your hand on his arm, scoot closer, and say, “That’s so cool. Did I ever tell you about the one time I [insert your funny story here]?” Getting to hear about you for a change will give him a chance to breathe, be impressed by your coolness, and then finally kiss you. got that look of love, say, “I love being kissed softly, like this...” Then show him what you mean. He’ll be so relieved you’re taking the lead that the next kiss is bound to be better. THEY’VE GOT RECORDS! These stars are guilty—of making dating look easy! Exhibit A: Here are the guys whose hearts they’ve reportedly stolen! THE CRIME: He moved too fast Plaintiff #4 met a hot guy in driver’s ed. He seemed to be a gentleman, but soon he was pressuring her to go from 0 to 60 in the backseat of his dad’s Explorer. When she asked him to slow down, he acted offended and angry. IN HIS DEFENSE: When some guys get revved up, they have a hard time putting on the brakes. And with other guys bragging about their playerdom in the locker room, there’s pressure to keep up. This guy clearly got confused between your interest in him and your interest in having sex with him. SENTENCE: Probation. Next time he heads for the fast lane, stop him in his tracks. Say, “I’m attracted to you, but I want to get to know you in a real way before getting physical.” If he’s truly into you, he’ll understand. If he doesn’t, that should be a big enough turnoff to make you move on—at warp speed! ! LINDSAY LOHAN HER VICTIMS: Wilmer Valderrama Jared Leto Sean Lennon Leonardo DiCaprio Ryan Adams THE CRIME: He’s a bad kisser Plaintiff #3 went to a concert with the cute drummer from her brother’s band, and they totally hit it off. But when they started to kiss, he overdid it and ended up slobbering all over her face! IN HIS DEFENSE: The first kiss can mean the difference between acceptance and rejection, and most of the time it’s left up to the guy to initiate it. That’s a lot of pressure! Some guys (mistakenly) think an overly passionate kiss lets a girl know just how much he really likes her—and slobbering ensues. SENTENCE: He gets off with a warning. Next time you hang out, when he’s PARIS HILTON HER VICTIMS: Rick Solomon Nick Carter Simon Rex Paris Latsis Stavros Niarchos III Ben McKenzie KRISTIN CAVALLARI HER VICTIMS: Stephen Colletti Brody Jenner Nick Lachey YYePG.Proudly.Presents,.Thx.For.Support! Indulge in these excerpts and you’ll be left craving to read the rest! ONLY IN YOUR DREAMS: A GOSSIP GIRL NOVEL BY CECILY VON ZIEGESAR The Gossip Girl series follows a group of gorgeous, sophisticated, wealthy New York friends. In this world of prestigious privateschool teens, drama is the one thing everyone has in common. In Only in Your Dreams, it’s the summer after high school graduation and beautiful yet flighty Serena Van der Woodsen is on the verge of becoming a movie star. She’s been shooting a remake of the classic movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s with her sexy costar Thaddeus... Serena clinked her glass to his. “To an incredible movie.” “To an incredible costar,” Thaddeus corrected, cocking his eyebrow. “And an incredible debut.” He draped his arms over the back of the bench and pulled Serena a little closer, resting his left hand on her left shoulder. “The fireworks are going to really get going soon, huh?” He nodded toward the river where a small one had already exploded. The DJ started playing a mellower tune, something by the Raves. “I know this song!” Serena cried. It sounded familiar but she couldn’t place it. “It’s the Raves,” Thaddeus explained. “I’m pretty tight ILLUSTRATIONS BY ZOHAR LAZAR YYePG.Proudly.Presents,.Thx.For.Support! with their drummer.” He reached over and took the burning cigarette from Serena, inhaling furtively. “Really? I know the girl singing. Her name’s Jenny. We went to high school together. Wait, I think she might have dated your friend, the drummer, what’s his name...?” “No.” Thaddeus laughed. “I don’t think she’s quite his type.” Oh? And what type is that? Serena wasn’t sure what that was supposed to mean, but she hadn’t come there to discuss Jenny Humphrey’s romantic life.... “Do me a favor?” Thaddeus asked. Before Serena could open her mouth to answer, he leaned in and kissed her on the lips. The timing was perfect: Over the Hudson River a massive explosion of fireworks resounded with a bang, their lights twinkling and then fading in an instant. It was totally cheesy but totally romantic: a totally Hollywood moment. Like, whoa. Stealing it out of the trailer gave her a rush she’d only experienced one other time, when she was 10 and stole a Bonne Bell bubble gum Lip Smacker. ************ Serena crept up the creaky metal steps to her trailer quietly— or as quietly as was possible in her clunky metallic silver Michael Kors wedges. She wasn’t even supposed to be there; the actors had all been released from their duties and the only people around were the crew responsible for striking the set. But Serena had decided to tag along with Blair that Wednesday—she wanted to grab the tiny black dress that Bailey Winter had designed for her to wear in the climactic party scene in the movie. It was the perfect thing to wear to her real party the next night. Stepping into the trailer, Serena switched on the light and closed the flimsy door behind her. The vanity was still littered with makeup and hair supplies, and all of her costumes, lovingly labeled and steamed to perfection by Blair’s stalker/intern, were hung, an inch apart, on a rolling rack. Gotcha. Serena grabbed the perfect little black dress. It was cut to fit her proportions exactly, and though the thin shoulder straps were covered with a subtle spray of jet-black beading, it was otherwise sleek and simple. This was so much easier than shopping.... Stealing it out of the trailer gave her a rush she’d only experienced one other time, when she was 10 and stole a Bonne Bell bubble gum Lip Smacker from Boyd’s. A knock on the trailer door made her freeze, petrified. “Who is it?” she asked shakily, quickly zipping up her orange Hermès canvas tote. ➜ A knock on the trailer door made Serena freeze, petrified. cosmogirl.com June/July 2006 161 YYePG.Proudly.Presents,.Thx.For.Support! B E ACh R E a Ds “Thad?” A thin, gorgeously tanned guy poked his head through the trailer door. His spiky brown hair was in artful disarray, and beneath his perfectly arched eyebrows his eyes were huge and green with long, beautiful lashes. He wore a snug black sleeveless tee and sported intricate tattoos of fish up and down his long, skinny arms. “No, it’s me,” Serena apologized. “Thad’s trailer is the next one over.” “Oh my gosh!” The boy blushed deeply. “I’m so sorry. I guess I should know better than to go charging into trailers.” “No, no, it’s okay.” Serena relaxed when she realized he wasn’t there to bust her for stealing. “I’m Serena.” “Oh my gosh, hi!” the stranger cried, skipping into the trailer, wallet chain jingling, hands extended, letting the door slam behind him. So much for stealing clothes in the still of the night. “Oh my gosh, Serena. It’s so good to meet you finally.” He grabbed her free hand in both of his and held it. “Um, you too,” she stammered. He had the faintest accent that she couldn’t quite place and she was drawing a total blank. Was she supposed to know this guy? “Damn, would you look at me? Just barging in here? You’re in the middle of something and I just swoop in like any gushing fan off the street. I’m so sorry. You must think I’m crazy.” The boy released her hand and shook his head, laughing. “No, no, I’m not busy or anything,” she lied, clutching her tote close to her chest. “I was just picking up something I left behind.” “So Thad said you guys are all done shooting?” the boy asked. “Do you mind if I sit? I’m gonna sit.” He settled into the chair in front of the vanity and crossed his legs.... Serena blushed. Who was this person? “And I’m still babbling,” he continued. “Oh my gosh, I’m so stupid sometimes. I’m Serge. It’s so great to meet you finally.” “Serge,” she repeated. Serge? Serge? Who the hell was Serge?... Excerpted with permission from Only in Your Dreams: A Gossip Girl Novel; Little, Brown and Company, 2006. Raquel, are headed to the biggest party of the season, but the day before, in a fit of rebellion, Evie had chopped off her hair and dyed it blue... Alex was overreacting about Evie and Raquel needing an escort to the party, but that was Alex, always the overprotective gentleman. He wasn’t as fine or tall as Jose and he wasn’t as funny as Mondo, but of all the Flojos, Evie guessed she needed someone like Alex around the most. The crowd was sketchy but far from threatening. The Bard Boys and their crew were more AA than A-list, really just a bunch of tanned homeboys who liked to party. All had done their prerequisite time in either County or rehab or had spent endless days hustling on the beach. People might picture a California beach party as a bunch of fit, golden-tanned teenagers gathered around a bonfire, but no such postcard existed from Bard. The three of them filled up at the nearest keg and Evie quickly took a gulp from her plastic cup. She didn’t really like beer, and keg kind was the worst. Still, she felt she had some catching up to do. “Hey, Evie.” She looked up. “Mikey?” At first Evie didn’t recognize Mikey Regalado. Evie hadn’t seen him since they were both in grade school. “Yeah, Mike.” He pumped the keg and directed the spout into a waiting cup. “How are you doing?” He looked Evie over. “Check out your crazy-ass hair.” “Oh yeah.” She felt slightly embarrassed. “I sorta messed it up.” Mikey’s own head was now shaved. Was he part of the Bard Boys? Evie wondered. “Nah, it looks good,” he told Evie. “You’ve always been so crazy.” “Really?” She was sort of surprised by his comment. She didn’t exactly feel exciting enough to ever be considered “crazy.” “Well, look at your hair!” She smiled, taking a reluctant sip from her cup. “Or should I say, lack of. Hey, remember—” “E-vie,” Raquel interrupted. “I gotta pee.” ****************** As Evie and Raquel left to look for an outhouse, Alex went to watch the band. Just moments later, Raquel found the Porta Potti. She rattled the white plastic door. “Dude!” she called out. “Come on, already! You got a line out here!” After a few moments the door unlocked and opened. When Evie looked up, she couldn’t believe who stepped out: Alejandra, as in de los Santos. While the Flojos were one of many “social groups” at Villanueva, there was actually another group that at least seemed similar to the Flojos. That group was the Sangros. The Sangros (short for sangrona, Spanish for full-blown bitch) were four girls from Mexico City. They were born in Distrito Federal, meaning they were Mexican Mexican, unlike the Flojos, who were born in California and were Mexican-American. While the Flojos were known for their flip-flops, the Sangros were known for their stripes, as in their perfectly calculated highlights—blonde highlights. HONEY BLONDE CHICA BY MICHELE SERROS Evie Gomez is a 15-year-old MexicanAmerican high school girl secretly torn between two very different cliques. She’s already down with the cool, laid-back surfer chicks, the Flojos (which is slang for lazy in Spanish and also represents the brand of flip-flops she and her friends wear). But the Sangros—stuck-up, pretty girls with blonde “striped” hair—are also starting to appeal to the hidden diva in her. Tonight, Evie and her best friend, YYePG.Proudly.Presents,.Thx.For.Support! “What did you do to your hair?” Alejandra asked. Not blended or woven, but rather straight stripes the width of a straw that made for a severe contrast against their dark layered hair. Evie and Raquel had always thought the Sangros had the tackiest hair imaginable. Alejandra de los Santos and her ah-migas, Fabiola, Natalia, and Xiomara, were resident students at Villanueva. It took some hearty bank to be a resident student at Villanueva, but the Sangros had fathers who pulled powerful punches down in the distrito, so in addition to their green cards, the Sangros also flashed gold.… Even in the doorway of an outhouse (and even with those horrid stripes), Evie thought Alejandra looked glamorous, a lighter shade of Beyoncé, ready to give a VMA acceptance speech.… “What are you doing here?” Raquel was already up in her face. “Shouldn’t you be home watching Sábado Gigante or something?” “What am I doing here?” Alejandra carefully stepped down from the outhouse. “Raquel, my second cousin Gabriel owns this farm. He is Pacifica Abalone. Shouldn’t you be reading Let’s Go Mexico and actually go? ” She took her last high-heel step onto the sand. “I’ve been coming to his parties for years.” She ran her white-tipped nails through her blonde-striped hair. “I’ve never seen you here before…” cosmogirl.com June/July 2006 Raquel stepped up to the outhouse and shut the door behind her. Evie was now stuck alone with Alejandra. This was a first. “Well, I gotta go to the bathroom.” Raquel gave Evie her beer to hold and pushed by Alejandra. “Excuse me.” She stepped up to the outhouse and shut the door behind her. Evie was now stuck alone with Alejandra. This was a first. Usually it was Raquel sister-necking a Sangro while Evie stood in awe. “What did you do to your hair?” Alejandra asked. Her almond-shaped eyes were topped with a glittery green eye shadow. She looked straight at Evie. “Nothing really.” Evie smoothed down the front of her bangs. “It’s no big deal.” “I guess not.” Alejandra snapped her gum before spitting it into a piece of paper she got from her pocket. “So, how’s the doughnut shop?” “Excuse me?” Evie tried to sound as fearless as Alejandra seemed. “Doesn’t your dad sell doughnuts or something?” Alejandra pulled out a pack of cigarettes from her suede bag. “No, my dad owns a company,” Evie said, surprised that she was actually bragging about her father’s business. “His chain, all four stores, sells pan dulce, not doughnuts.” “Pan dulce? ” Alejandra smirked as she lit her cigarette. “You gotta be kidding.” “No,” Evie said. “Why would I be?” ➜ 163 YYePG.Proudly.Presents,.Thx.For.Support! It was too late for Jason to help her. Too late for anyone. “Well, I wouldn’t know anything about fast food.” Alejandra took her first pull off her cigarette. “My family’s more scholarly, I guess. My father’s the VP at UNAM in Mexico.” Alejandra smiled smugly. “La Universidad Nacional—” “I know what UNAM means.” Evie’s pride abruptly cut her off. “O-kay,” Alejandra pursed her lips. “So, as I was saying, I’m going to be doing an internship at Cal State Channel Islands this semester.” “Good for you, Alejandra,” Evie answered, looking up at the outhouse. What was taking Raquel so long? “Yeah,” Alejandra blew smoke upward. “They’re getting a new chancellor soon, Dr. Frank de LaFuente.” “Frank de LaFuente?” Evie asked. “Claro. I might be working with him directly. Then I’m gonna apply for an internship at Yale next summer and—” But Evie wasn’t listening anymore. When she heard the name Frank de LaFuente, she felt her stomach drop hard. Frank de LaFuente was Dee Dee’s father. Dee Dee had been Evie and Raquel’s best friend when they were young girls growing up in Rio Estates. Raquel was Evie’s official best friend now, but Dee Dee was actually the closest friend Evie had ever had. Evie had practically lived at the de LaFuentes’. Evie hated to admit it, but when they were younger, she had always wished Dee Dee’s mother were her own. Margaret de LaFuente didn’t put on airs like her mom, and Margaret was always home, always around to talk, not like Evie’s mother, who was always off chasing department store sales. But when Dee Dee was 12, Margaret got sick, like, really sick, and died. Then Dee Dee and her father moved out of California and Evie hadn’t heard from her in the last four years. Dee Dee never answered Evie’s e-mails or returned her calls. Evie still didn’t understand exactly what happened. Just hearing Dee Dee’s name gave Evie a stomachache. Suddenly the Porta Potti door opened and Raquel stepped out, zipping up her jeans. “What,” she said to Alejandra, “you still here?” Excerpted with permission from Honey Blonde Chica; Simon Pulse, 2006. VAMPIRE BEACH: BLOODLUST BY ALEX DUVAL Girls adore Jason Freeman. But that alone can’t make him happy when he’s living in slow-moving Fraser, Michigan, with his family. But when they move to DeVere Heights in Malibu Beach, California, the good times begin! It seems like as soon as YYePG.Proudly.Presents,.Thx.For.Support! B E ACh R E a Ds Jason touches down, his life picks up— popular people at school, like Kyle, Sienna, and her boyfriend Brad, embrace him. After a day of partying on the beach, Jason finally gets some time alone with Sienna, his secret crush. Still, despite all the fun, Jason’s starting to notice some very peculiar things happening in DeVere Heights... “Can I walk with you?” Jason asked. Sienna shrugged. “If you want,” she replied. The sun was sinking as they made their way across the velvety sand in silence. Jason suddenly realized they were only about a hundred feet from Sienna’s house. He didn’t have much time left. “Look, I’m sorry,” he said softly. “For what?” “I said some horrible things last night,” Jason answered. He couldn’t remember exactly what he’d said, but he knew he’d hurt her. “The word I’d use is dirty,” Sienna corrected. She stopped and turned to face him. “I’d call them dirty things.” I saw you up there with Kyle. Dirty! The words sliced into Jason’s brain. Suddenly, he could hear himself saying them to Sienna. But the words brought back something else: the memory of Sienna and Kyle together on the couch, Kyle’s hands sliding over her curves. Jealousy crashed over Jason like one of those waves that knock you to the ocean floor. “I shouldn’t have said that,” he told Sienna. “But you meant it. You still feel that way. I can see it on your face,” Sienna accused, her eyes darkening until they were almost black. “As if you weren’t doing exactly the same thing with Erin.” “Yeah, okay. But I wasn’t cheating on anyone,” Jason said. “Right,” Sienna snapped back. “So when you saw me with Kyle, you were thinking about Brad? How I was treating Brad so badly?” she inquired, wrapping her arms around herself. “No,” Jason admitted with a sigh. “No, I wasn’t thinking about Brad at all. And what I said…it was because…” But he couldn’t continue. How could he tell her that he’d said what he had because the sight of another guy’s hands on her had made him insane with jealousy? Jason knew that Sienna was right: He really didn’t know her. Yeah, she was beautiful. But so was Belle. So was Erin. Malibu was filled with beautiful girls. What made Sienna so different? It was like she could reach into his chest and touch his heart. “I was an idiot,” he said helplessly. “Yeah, you were,” Sienna agreed, but she smiled and took a step closer to Jason. “You wanted some time with me last night. You’ve got time now. Are you finished?” She stood so close, he could smell that apple-oceanvanilla scent of her. “No,” he murmured. “No, I’m not finished.” He reached out, wanting to touch her face. But he hesitated, his fingers inches away from her, close enough to feel the heat of her skin. cosmogirl.com June/July 2006 Jason’s bare foot hit the chilly flesh and sent him sprawling onto the cold, wet sand. What had he tripped over? It couldn’t have been... Sienna turned her head slightly, closing the distance between his hand and her cheek. He was touching her. That was all the invitation Jason needed. He took her face in his hands and kissed her, tasting her, taking her in. Sienna’s mouth responded to his, and she ran her hands up his chest to lace them around his neck. And then...Jason forced himself to pull away. They stared at each other for a long moment before Sienna wordlessly turned toward her house on the cliff above them. Jason watched her climb the steep stairs cut into the bluff. Then he turned and raced down the beach, his body alive with the heat of passion and hope. He veered toward the water, picking up speed, needing it, needing the motion to channel all the emotion and energy those few minutes with Sienna had created. Fast, faster. His arms pumping, his heart pounding with the rhythm of his feet on the wet sand. Spray from the ocean hit his face as he ran along the shoreline. It cooled his skin, which still burned with the memory of Sienna’s touch. Now he was sprinting, running flat-out—so fast that he had no chance to stop when he saw it. Jason’s bare foot hit the chilly flesh and sent him sprawling onto the cold, wet sand. His mind spun, shock filling his body. What had he tripped over? It couldn’t have been.... He scrambled up and turned around, praying he’d been wrong about what he’d seen. But the girl’s body still lay there. Facedown. Her flesh cold and blue. CPR, Jason thought frantically. He dropped to his knees next to the girl and tried to roll her onto her back, but she felt heavy, waterlogged. A wave splashed onto the shore, its undertow pulling her out of his grasp. Jason felt the setting sun hot upon the back of his neck as he reached for her cold arm again. He waited for the next wave and used the thrust of the water to help him roll her over. Carrie Smith’s blank eyes stared up at him. It was too late for Jason to help her. Too late for anyone. She was dead. ! The first night, I dreamed of a faceless woman with long black hair wandering around. I thought it was just a dream but as time went by, lights would randomly turn on and off and I felt like I was being watched. One day I asked the owner of the house if he’d had any strange occurrences when he lived there. He said, ‘Oh, sure. This place has been haunted for years!’ Turns out, the house was built over an old drive-in theater that used to be next to a cemetery. While the drive-in was still open, there were reports of strange happenings inside the snack bar and restrooms—where the house was located. Those events always involved a woman with long black hair and no face! I don’t live there anymore.” —Daniel Dae Kim, Lost COSMOGIRL.COM/TRIVIA What young hip-hop artist won the Fake ID award at the 2006 TRL awards? —Matt Dallas, Kyle XY And I thought my breath smelled like death! FEAR jerker “It was the middle of the summer and I was spending the night on the couch at my buddy’s house. He had just moved into what used to be the residence for the caretaker of the cemetery next door. I was asleep for a little while, and then I woke up because I was cold. I tucked the blankets in around me like a cocoon and drifted off to sleep. Moments later, the blankets were around my waist and it was freezing! So I tucked myself in again. While I was trying to fall back asleep I could feel something in the room but couldn’t see it. I was trying to focus my eyes when my blankets were jerked down my body. I pulled them back but couldn’t overpower whatever the force was. I was playing tug-of-war with someone or something that wasn’t even there! The jerking kept getting more violent when suddenly my friend came into the living room to see what all the noise was about and everything stopped instantly. I couldn’t go back to sleep that night.” —Tyler Labine, Invasion “There’s this antique doll carriage in our guest room and the area around it is always cold. One night when my cousin was staying in the room with her 5-year-old daughter, she felt someone pushing her in the middle of the night, asking her to play. She woke up to tell her daughter to go to sleep—but she already was. When she asked her daughter about it in the morning she said, ‘It wasn’t me.’ Then the daughter described a sick-looking girl who lives in the closet and doesn’t like it when people move her carriage. The closet is next to the carriage. I told my mom to get —Eddie Hassell, Surface rid of it, but it’s still there.” bug-a-boo! 174 COSMOGIRL.COM/FREAKYDEAKY MAKE OUR SPINES TINGLE WITH YOUR CREEPIEST STORIES! She said that I was meant to have a twin but something happened in the womb and I ended up alone and now I have the ‘power of two’! I called my mom later that night and told her what the woman said. She told me there actually was a complication in the beginning stages of her pregnancy with me. It freaked me out and I haven’t been back to that psychic since.” riest shows!
